Herzog 麻豆视频 Hosts Christian Education Summit with聽Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders聽
The Herzog 麻豆视频 hosted dozens of Christian school leaders and other education stakeholders from across the state for its Arkansas Christian Education Summit on Monday. Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders addressed the Summit attendees, answering questions about the Arkansas LEARNS Act, which she signed into law last year.
Sanders explained how she developed the revolutionary school choice initiative and touted the partnerships that helped garner wide support for the bill, including a partnership with State Representative Keith Brooks who also attended the Herzog 麻豆视频鈥檚 Summit.
鈥淚 knew it was something that the people who voted for me wanted 鈥 they were demanding it,鈥 the governor said. 鈥淲e talked about this being the first and biggest priority that I had coming in as governor 鈥 to really flip our education system on its head.鈥
Describing herself as an 鈥渦napologetic believer,鈥 Sanders discussed her own Christian faith, her commitment to school choice and the need to strengthen both public and private education sectors to achieve the best results for students.
鈥淲hatever a family needs to meet the demands of their student 鈥 that鈥檚 where we are in modern day education,鈥 Sanders told the crowd. 鈥淲e need to do a better job of helping to make sure every student has a pathway to success.鈥
鈥淟EARNS is not anti-public school,鈥 Sanders emphasized. 鈥淚t was the largest investment that we鈥檝e made as a state into our public schools in decades. We also want to see our public schools succeed and do well.”
鈥淐ompetition breeds excellence, and education should be no different. By building up both sectors, we expect to see a lot more success across the board. We want to see every sector do well.鈥
A key component of LEARNS was the creation of the Educational Freedom Account, which can be used by eligible families to cover private school tuition, fees, uniforms and other required expenses. Sanders said about 6,000 students are currently enrolled in education freedom accounts.
During a question-and-answer time led by Herzog 麻豆视频 Spokesman Chris Stigall, several Christian school leaders posed questions for the governor. Brad Jones, superintendent of Fayetteville Christian School, asked about protections to ensure Christian schools can stay true to their beliefs while accepting public funds.
鈥淚 think that鈥檚 why it鈥檚 important for people like yourself to engage and to continue to build those coalitions of support and make sure like-minded people are representing you in the Legislature,鈥 Sanders replied.
Sanders also took a question from a school leader on how Christian schools should demonstrate accountability to their students, parents and the state.
鈥淥ne of the biggest places we want to focus on is student growth and achievement,鈥 answered Sanders. 鈥淪o, making sure there is some sort of accountability and some sort of mechanism to measure for that. That growth piece is really critical 鈥 making sure we aren鈥檛 just measuring 鈥楧id they pass or fail?鈥 but 鈥楬ow much progress did they make?鈥欌
Sanders鈥 participation in the Herzog 麻豆视频鈥檚 Christian Education Summit came after she signed a proclamation last week declaring Jan. 21-27 as Arkansas Parental Choice Week, a nod to the nationwide recognition of School Choice Week.
